DeeperSoul Session 06 - Mixed by DJ JP aka João

.
.

Being a House Music lover for 8 years and travelling from the north to south of the country to hear the best world djs, it was natural that João Paulo turned himself a dj. He already played at several music bars and parties: "100 stress" (where he played with the two “Os Corvos” band violinists and with Selmer Rodrigues, one of the best national saxophonists), “Pikolé", “Aquárius", "Dose 3 Large" and "Oficina do Cais", among others.
Actually, besides doing part of the Liquid Music Productions project, João Paulo is resident in the "Tazz" (Alcochete), considered the biggest Portuguese music bar. He has as well a project called “Soul & Sax Productions” (with saxophonist Selmer Rodrigues and, shortly, with the percussionist Nuno Vitorino). His style is eclectic but it is evident the great affinity he has with soulful, jazzy and spiritual House Music.

Vega Rec.

The Italian Stefano Tirone, S-Tone Inc., is master on the combination of live instrumentation with the electronic goodies, always with Jazz and Brazilian influences. “Dreamer” and “Verao”, his last releases, both on label Schema, shows how good he is on that combination. The first, the beautiful “Dreamer”, has the Laura Fedele’s voice and lovely sax and trombone lines by Gilberto Tarocco and Beppe Caruso, respectively. The second, “Verao” (witch means “Summer” in Portuguese), has the Lucciana Cury’s voice and is the perfect sound for the season that gives the track name.

Let Me Love You

Vega Rec.

With a sultry vocal by Anané and Mr V for the rap, this song has latin influences. The instrumental reveal, once again, the MAW are able to make a beautiful and dancefloor song. The Afro Carribbean beat with discrete percussions, soul keys, funky guitar and great bass make this track a hit that all the dancefloor must know! This is a Summer Anthem!
The package contain bonus beat and accapella. One more exellent single on Vega Records!

Crash

A Crash acaba de lançar o vinyl do tema “First Time” de Kenny Carvajal.

Out now on Dino & Terry’s label, “First Time” is a wonderful production from Kenny Carvajal. Carla Prathe’s lovely voice brings passion to the track and the intrumental part is truly irresistible: warm guitar solo and a gorgeous organ ride. Definetely, this is a release not to be missed.

Another hot release from the french label "Serial" for those who like deep and vocally stuff. It's just a breath of fresh air !

Soldiers of Twilight (Demon Richie & Dj Rork) offered us the highly groovy track "would u share" with one more time on the vocal the fantastic vibe of Ladybird. More deep & soulful atmosphere, lush harmonies with a perfect beat and on the B side another vision with the "fresh mix" more stronger with a funky guitar and a catchy bass. Fuzion

Fuzion Records are poised to raise the standard and value of 12" releases with a single that almost certainly needs to be double-purchased. With a full vocal mix and three raw dub versions, the possibilities of creative DJing are heightened. The eagerly anticipated follow up to Jellybean Soul's underground smash, I appreciate, is the title that launches Fuzion Records. Again George Mena and Frankie Estevez join forces under their Love House Music guise and turn out a thumping garage track with Maxine Inniss providing her unmistakable vocals. With refreshingly original yet masterfully penned lyrics, Maxine Inniss gives a proud but warm delivery of her second song, giving hope that a full artist album is not too far away.

Stephanie B feat. Live Orchestra – Can’t Stop The Feeling
.
It is always my hope to review new tracks that are favourites of yours and mine. However, my heart and passion stems from years of older house that rocked warehouses in the early nineties. So I will vary my selections from early 1990’s to now in hopes to keep you inspired and keep you playing the very music that stirs’ us within. This leads me to my next track for review called “Can’t Stop The Feeling”. This track was released in 1999 and I can remember it coming out. Although I missed its original release date I was fortunate to snag a copy of this gem in a vintage record shop. It’s the vibe and essence of the evolution in house music. It starts with a feeling and then becomes a vibe. This French house track still has me shaking my BOOTAY till dawn. Its soulfulness is enough to fill the emptiest of hearts.
.
Production value is top quality and the pressing has lasted 6 years with only minimal damage from handling. It definitely has the New York garage feel with a France harmony to the layers that this track exudes. Thankfully the producers made this track super DJ friendly with an intro and outro that would compliment any mix. This is a must have and if you can find it, hang on to it…even for the sake of having it.

Not only do you have “Can’t Stop the Feeling” on one side of this LP but you have a jazzy instrumental that would entice anyone into feeling the soul. If it weren’t for the flute and sax in this track it would sound like most tracks being produced nowadays. The soul and passion comes from the voice of instruments. The sax definitely takes this track to a whole new level of jazz and house. This production is definitely a New York contender but the France stellar production makes this LP a double treasure with double the pleasure. If you need a transition track from one vocal to another this particular version would bring your mix to new levels. It’s a perfect bridge to a higher playing field.

My Dream (Sueno Soul mix)

Essencial.

DeeperSoul Interview - DJ SPEN

Vinil!
--- DJ SPEN ---
.....Interview

....DeeperSoul

"I think deep soulful house is like jazz to a certain extent. It’s underground and more of specialty music"
.
PART I
.
Could you tell us how you got into Djing / producing and about your early career?
.
I have been DJ’ing since I was about 13 years old. I was heavily influenced by my parents’ gospel music and my older brothers’ rock and soul music. From age 13, I was DJ’ing at a local radio station doing “master mixes” for them. I started a local hip-hop group called Numarx and at that time I began to produce and write songs and started becoming very interested in studio equipment. During that time, some of us from the Nurmax wrote the hit record “Girl You Know it’s True”.

.
What’s your music background?
.
My music background is wide – of course, my family and early roots are in gospel. My career began with hip-hop and I eventually got into dance music which was an easy transition as I always loved disco music and the early dance music was very soulful and was an extension of disco and even some funk. I’ve dabbled in playing the piano a bit and even took classes but I never really got serious. I like Dj’ing too much.
.
Quincy Jones is probably the biggest influence. Others are Gamble & Huff, Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, Funk Brothers, Jazzy Jeff, Marley Marl, and the list goes on…
.
You were at Basement Boys, then you formed the Jasper Street Company and then, last year, you created your own label – Code Red. Is there a different concept / target behind your label?
.
The target of Code Red is younger than anything I’ve done in the past. What you’ll hear from Code Red is a lot of hard, tough rhythms but always with the soulful element. My attempt is really to do a lot of experimental of genres and see what comes out.
.
The number of files illegally shared on the Internet don’t stop to grow. As a producer, how is this affecting you? And as a DJ? What could be the solution?
.
At this point, I don’t see a solution. File sharing is ridiculously easy. It affects me because it takes money out of my pocket from the people who used to buy the records and CD’s. Until there is some type of Internet regulation that can minimize this, it will continue to be a serious problem. What I do it try to make the best records possible that can transcend past Internet sales – which is what we are trying to do with Code Red…more of a mass marketing operation rather than an underground situation.
.
What do you think of the deep/soulful house scene at the moment and how do you think it will be in the future?
.
I think deep soulful house is like jazz to a certain extent. It’s underground and more of specialty music. The problem is that music changes constantly so I really believe that eventually the soulful sound will come back strong – the question is when! Needless to say, I love underground house music and will continue to do those records as well.
.
Nowadays, we see Electro and 80’s sound influencing many House productions. Do you think that, in order to move on in house music, producers have to always look back?
.
I think that it’s good to know the history of the music. I have said before that there’s nothing new under the sun…just like the disco sound came back in the mid to late 90’s, so it seems the electro 80’s sound has come back today.
.
PART II
.
Wich producing equipment are you using? Do you use software only?
.
No I do not use software only. I am a little old-school when it comes to using keyboards and sound modules in case of software problems. Nuendo 3 is what we use as our main program, accompanied by some various secondary programs.
.
What is your own favourite track, the one that you are most proud of?
.
It’s hard to decide between “Another Day” and “Til I Found You”. I was going through a lot at the time I wrote those songs and really poured my heart into writing the lyrics and arranging the musical accompaniment.
.
What records are you currently spinning every time you play?
.
Kerri Chandler “Barathym”. The Harness & Spencer remix of Fantasia. “ Arabian Nightmare”, “The Way You Love Me”, “For the Love”, DJ Gregory :Head Talking”, and DJ Technic “Gabryelle”.
.
I have notice that you are a voice talent too, is that true? Tell us, tell us everything!
.
No – whoever told you that is lying! ;-) Yes I dabble a little but nothing that I would call serious.
.
What can we expect to hear more from you in the future?
.
We have a Code Red EP on Defected coming out which will include “For the Love” remixes and a new track by KW Griff produced by Thommy Davis and myself called “Arabian Nightmare”, a lot of remixes also will be coming out at the end of the year. Also a Vonita White (formerly of JSC) album – at some point in the near future.
.
You are a much respected producer / dj with a career span of more than 20 years, do you have any advice for those who are starting?
.
Just do what’s in your heart to the best of your ability and work hard at it. Eventuall you will see results.
.

Break n' Bossa

More Funk Into It

Schema

The latest instalment in Schema's prolific Break n' Bossa series is Chapter Seven: More Funk Into It. Primarily a CD only release, the wax sampler provides just two tracks featured on its shiny silver sister. Although this 12" only touches the surface of the full release, its content is exclusive and is an estimable release in its own right.
The 12" is reassuringly loud pressing, with the muted drum kick of Koom.h's Mr. Cool opening proceedings. Softly nodding under dinner party chatter, crystal piano keys and Salvo Dub's deep bass line, the groove soon drops into a contagious mid-tempo pulse that provides the hearty foundation for Giogio Rizzo's soothing percussion and Marco Martino's atmospheric keys.
On the flip, 7 Samurai turn out a splendid rework of No Problems, an original recording by The Dining Rooms, a production duo hailing from Milan, Italy. Stephano Guittoni, a successful disc jockey, and Cesare Malfatti, a musician emerging from Italy's punk scene, became one in 1998 to delve into the musical realms of hip-hop, funk, jazz and blues. After a full debut album and several exciting side-projects, the pair expanded their group, incorporating a full, five-piece band and recruiting Maria Arena to perform dazzling visuals at their gigs. No Problems steps away from the 4/4 groove of Mr. Cool and brings to the table an elegant swing-jazz swagger, strengthened by hip-shaking percussion and Jonas Hermes' cushioned double-bass.
More Funk Into It is an excursion into contemporary jazz, swing and house music, essential listening for all who love their vibes ebullient and eclectic

Wich producing equipment are you using?
.
I use both software and hardware stuff. I mix on a Mackie 32:8 console, Nord Lead, MPC2000, JV1080, other rack stuff like effects, EQs and compressors. As for software, I use Cubase SX 2.0, MinimoogV, Lounge Lizard, EVP78, B4, Novation V-Station and BassStation VSTi, BlueTubes Bundle, Waves Plugins, you name it. Lately I use the EVP78 more than the Lounge Lizard for some reason.
.
What is your own favourite track, the one that you are most proud of?
.
They're all my favorite at the time. I say that because after hearing them so many times as I work on them, I get really sick of them and end up wanting to just half-ass it. I'm sure I'm not alone in this one.
But out of all, I'd say "My words" because nobody wanted it at first. I shopped it to a ton of labels but all either never responded or simply turned it down. I was getting ready to put it out myself until I got the call from Mark Mendoza and Carl Dupree from Phuture Sole, which was a wonderful surprise. To date that project has been licensed 5 times.

.
If you have the opportunity, with who would you like to work with?
.
I would love to work with so many. Down to one, probably Raul Midon. The guy is a phenominal singer and musician.
.
What records are you currently spinning every time you play?
.
"Father" F. Feliciano mix is always in my bag, "Listen for it" by M. Enochson, Franck Roger's stuff, Mr.V's "Un dia bonito", Abicah Soul's "Diablo" & "just a call away", Duron Tarik's stuff, and anything by Louie Vega.
.
What can we expect to hear more from you in a near future?
.
I have a few things coming out. One is a remix for Smooth Agent, called "Sea of Love", a remix of Dwayne Morgan's "Everything" that I did for one to watch out for label Camio out of the UK. Currently working with a very talented singer Lafayete on a new project, as well as a couple of instrumentals which might end up being vocals, we'll see...

Feet - "Nightlife" (Farplane)
.
Out soon on Farplane, this fantastic fresh house tune receives the Rasmus Faber remix treatment too. Feet's new record combines house music with jazzy and latin elements for a fantastic result. The "Ultimate remix" is a sophisticated souful house track, with great vocal line, infected by jazzy and swinging atmospheres. The "Rasmus Faber remix" is more groovy, he adds some latin elements, percussive grooves and a fantastic bassline. The record is closed by "Bailar" a bonus track that combines once again latin and jazzy elements with kickin house grooves, and it's sung in portuguese. Summer's here.

Mia Taylor & Ralf Gum - "Ordinary girl" (ProgCity Deep)
.
ProgCity Deep is going to release another quality record, provided this time by Ralf Gum, that teamed up with vocalist Mia Taylor for this funky/soulful gem. The "Vocal mix" is a strong version with live instrumentation, solid groove and funky bassline to support the Mia's voice. The "Dub mix"goes a little deeper, with great breakdowns and less vocals. On the B side, the "Joyce & Paxon's dub" goes soulful, while the "Karol XVII remix" is a more pumpin' and groovin' affair. Love it.

Relight EP 3

Nite Grooves

Este EP é o terceiro retirado de “Relight”, contendo “Tangerine (Relight Kool Breeze mix)”, “Can You Find The Heart (Relight mix)” e “Fantasy Suite”, deliciosos temas soulful.
Como alguém disse, “smooth House has never sounded so good”.

Rhythmic Deep Presents Interpretations: Dream On (Rhythmic Deep)
.
London based, but Detroit gazing in terms of output, here June Lopez's starry-eyed "Dream On" gets re-rubbed by John Beltran and the Napi Hedz, a trio consisting of Reggie Dokes, Piranhahead and Craig Huckaby. Beltran's revision is a stirring teched-up outing, with manic synths, rattling chords and nervous drums. The 'Jazz Journey' from the Napi Hez is an equally inspiring vision, where somber drums and motherly keys make a bed for abstract vocal touches and downcast strings to lie in.
.
Aaron Jerome – Man Troubles (Wah Wah 45s)
.
Not a musical narrative concerning a certain type of dysfunction, "Man Troubles" is a respectful tribute to the music of Mark 'Troubleman' Pritchard, a global communicating broken beat master and former Jedi Knight, until his musical partner lost it and left the planet for another universe. "Man Troubles" combines computerised synths, focused keys and tight drums in a way that shows admiration for Pritchard's music, but thankfully isn't just a carbon copy of a Troubleman record. "Jelabi" watches synths come out of the darkness, where they're joined by creepy keys, meek guitars and a messy bass.

DeeperSoul Interview

Vinil!
Kenny Carvajal

.... .Interview

....DeeperSoul

Kenny Carvajal is a talent producer/remixer and dj. In near past, Kenny has delivered some master productions in labels like Crash, Iwanai, Smooth Agent, Camio and Phuture Sole, which made him one of the most loved names by the soulful house enthusiastics.

PART I

Could you tell us how you got into Djing / Producing and about your early career?

I started DJing about 10 or 12 years ago when I got a free house record from a record store, which was a Frankie Knuckles record. I've been hooked ever since. I then asked around where I could get more music like that and the guy at the record store pointed out some flyers to loft and rave parties. I bought my first pair of turntables soon after, followed by drum machines and synths a few years after that.

What’s your music background?

I liked Rock and New wave alot when I was younger because that's all my brother played around the house. He was a guitar player in a band and needed someone to jam with while at home so he taught me how to play bass. From there I learned guitar, drums, then percussion. This was when I was around 9 or 10 years old. I've been into instruments ever since.
Now I play keys. I played keys on all of my music unless otherwise noted on the credits.
As for incfluences, I really love the music of Masters at work, Frankie Feliciano, Blaze, Spinna, Osunlade, Markus Enochson...

You are from Chicago, the birthplace of house music. Much respectable artists come from there and lots of others are emerging in the scene. Do you think Chicago is a “magic” place to the house producers?

There are a lot of talented people here in Chicago from DJs, to artists, producers, etc. But I wouldn't consider it a "Magic" place, simply because the scene has grown so much that there're wonderful music coming from all over. But yeah, I'm friends with a few producers here and we do help each other in one way or another. I wish I had that luxury starting out since I had no idea what to do. I actually still don't.

Nowadays, we see Electro and 80’s sound influencing many House productions. Do you think that, in order to move on in house music, producers have to always look back?

I really don't know the answer to that to be honest. My thing is good music is good music. I just hope to be a part of it for a very long time.

The numbers of files illegally shared on the Internet don’t stop to grow. As a producer, how is this affecting you? And as a DJ?What could be the solution?

Yes, it does affect the producers, the record labels, the stores etc. It used to be that the producers are the only ones playing the music before it comes out, which builds the anticipation for the consumer who are then eager to get one of the first copies. Now what happens is that the build-up goes away too quickly since everone's playing the new music way before it's released, drowning people with the newest and the hottest.
Unfortunately, the only way to stop it is to not give it out. But that's just not possible. Me personally, I'm guilty of wanting the newest. But I have no problems asking for it from the producers themselves, if it's not given to me beforehand. Of course I return the favor if I'm lucky enough that I get asked for my music.

PART II

Wich producing equipment are you using?

I use both software and hardware stuff. I mix on a Mackie 32:8 console, Nord Lead, MPC2000, JV1080, other rack stuff like effects, EQs and compressors. As for software, I use Cubase SX 2.0, MinimoogV, Lounge Lizard, EVP78, B4, Novation V-Station and BassStation VSTi, BlueTubes Bundle, Waves Plugins, you name it. Lately I use the EVP78 more than the Lounge Lizard for some reason.

What is your own favourite track, the one that you are most proud of?

They're all my favorite at the time. I say that because after hearing them so many times as I work on them, I get really sick of them and end up wanting to just half-ass it. I'm sure I'm not alone in this one. But out of all, I'd say "My words" because nobody wanted it at first. I shopped it to a ton of labels but all either never responded or simply turned it down. I was getting ready to put it out myself until I got the call from Mark Mendoza and Carl Dupree from Phuture Sole, which was a wonderful surprise. To date that project has been licensed 5 times.

If you have the opportunity, with who would you like to work with?

I would love to work with so many. Down to one, probably Raul Midon. The guy is a phenominal singer and musician.

What records are you currently spinning every time you play?

"Father" F. Feliciano mix is always in my bag, "Listen for it" by M. Enochson, Franck Roger's stuff, Mr.V's "Un dia bonito", Abicah Soul's "Diablo" & "just a call away", Duron Tarik's stuff, and anything by Louie Vega.

What can we expect to hear more from you in a near future?

I have a few things coming out. One is a remix for Smooth Agent, called "Sea of Love", a remix of Dwayne Morgan's "Everything" that I did for one to watch out for label Camio out of the UK. Currently working with a very talented singer Lafayete on a new project, as well as a couple of instrumentals which might end up being vocals, we'll see... . I've been bad but I try to update my site, www.kennycarvajal.info, with upcoming music and mixes, so pls. visit and don't hesitate to send me an e-mail to say hi.

Shining of life

Jihad Muhammad - The Dawn (Camio Records)
.
New Jersey Veteran DJ/Producer Jihad Muhammad has done it again! "The Dawn" is a beautiful piece with exceptional keyboard work done by Vincent Jeffries. Because of the excellent production work which includes a funky bassline and solid percussions, this track can be used as a riding tool, but as whole this piece is definitely strong enough to stand on it's own. Released on Camio Records (UK) June 2005 with mixes by Kenny Carvajal, Groove Assassin and, of course the producer of this piece, Jihad Muhammad. Don't sleep on this, I highly reccomend this track...

Kaskade - "Everything (Kaskade Big Room mix)" [OM Records]

Well if you've ever looked for an inspirational house track then you would definitely have this production in your possession...as sexy as the vocals may be it's really the words that catch my attention...with the guitar effect in the background you realize that it's the waves of all different sounds that gives it energy...I have always praised Kaskade in all his productions because he keeps the soul and energy, deep and alive...I can't thank him enough for putting his heart into his music...

This is definitely the "Big Room" mix and would bring a beautiful crowd front and centre, where all the love is on the dance floor...I can vouch for the inspirational aspect of the message as I can't wait to play this for my soulful and inspired fans...and when I mix this track you can't help but want to play the entire song out...it's just better that way...

Kaskade - "Everything (original extended mix)" [OM Records]

Funny enough when I first heard the opening I felt like it had that retro feel of Depeche Mode-ness...definitely caters to the deeper folks who appreciate a softer approach to Collette's sultry voice...I'd definitely throw this down at a party of darker yummy choices...more underground tone and feel that would inspire me to throw this down over some bumpin bassline...it is a transition vocal track that helps build the ultimate crescendo...this is a must have to complete the variety remix's...

A Fuzion Records acabou de lançar o seu segundo disco: "I'm so glad" - Fuzion feat. Chris Herbert.

Defected

Defected are on fire at the moment, with some quality releases already under their belt this year, this one just pushes the temperature up another 100 degrees! The original is a very africanism style track with wicked bass, beats & percussion. There are more mixes, Cevin Fisher does his thing with his Booty Remix deep pounding beats perhaps a little more tribal than the original. But the creme de la creme of this package comes from man of the moment, Rasmus Faber - with a club and dub mixes - these are the ones to go for, the club mix being pick of the bunch for me. Starts off nice and simple with the beats and the vocals and build up into a beautiful piece of house, super hot keys and bass - possibly Faber's best work yet - what you expect from the man and a whole lot more. This will be massive in Ibiza, make sure it is here too!

Jon Cutler & Michael Watford – Watcha Gonna Do? (MN2S)
Promo
.
This straight-talking vocal outing from Cutler and Watford is God-fearing House of the tallest order. Watford's uplifting vocals stride forward on a magic carpet made of pressing synths, romantic keys and tingling strings. The 'Kings Of Soul Mix' is a more ostentatious interpretation, where flawless piano keys hold the listener's attention, whilst the 'Reel Soul Mix' sees the bass purr under the watchful ear of some beautiful keys.
.
Fanatix feat. Kele Le Roc – Lesson Learned (Osiris Music)
Release Date: 25th July 2005

.
Ms. Le Roc gives the 'soul'ful House crew a real song in the form of this number, which suggests that recovering from a painful situation can only make you stronger. Jumping beats, silky keys and velvety guitars back Kele's aggrieved words on the vocal version. A grimy bass, slammed beats and outer-planetary synths meet on the Dub.
